Bernadette

(1844–79)
   Saint and Mystic.
Bernadette Subirous was the daughter of a miller and grew up in the French village of Lourdes. Between 11 February and 16 July 1858, she claimed to have had eighteen visions of the Virgin mary, who went by the title of the ‘Immaculate Conception’. She joined the Order of the Sisters of Charity in 1866 and she died at the age of thirty-five. Miraculous healings took place at the Lourdes spring from the late 1850s and it was recognised as an official place of pilgrimage in 1862. Even today the faithful flock to the village seeking physical and mental cures and many welldocumented healings have occurred. Bernadette was canonised in 1933.
